Security Guard

Multiple local job opportunities are now opening for well-trained Security Guards.  The Adult Education Program at DCMO BOCES prepares you to enter this career field and also helps you upgrade your existing Security Guard certification requirements.  Here is what we  offer:

8-Hour Pre-Employment Security Guard Training


This course provides an introduction to the Security Guard Act of 1992, the role of a security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, ethics and conduct, and course review. An examination will also be given. When you successfully complete this 8-hour course and pass the exam you will receive an official course completion certificate. Please bring snack/meal and beverage to class.

8-Hour Annual Update for Security Guard


This course will provide the New York State certification requirement for security guards.  The course is designed to keep all active security guards current and/or to update their training.

Approved by the New York State Bureau for Municipal Police and taught by Police Academy instructors. Participants will receive State-approved certification. Prerequisite: 16-Hour Security Guard Training. Please bring snack/lunch and beverage to class.

16-Hour Security Guard Training


This course is the second part of the New York State certification requirement for security guards and is approved by the New York State Bureau for Municipal Police. This course will provide you with the New York State Certification needed for Employment as a Security Guard.

Prerequisite: 8-Hour Pre-Employment Security Guard Training. Please bring snack/lunch and beverage to class.


Reimbursement Policy:  

The New York State Certified training courses are subject to the following reimbursement policy, as specified by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). 

  • Students will be entitled to a 100% refund if they withdraw from the course at any time prior to the start of instruction.  
  • If the 8-hour Annual Update course is divided between two 4 hour days, student will be entitled to a 50% refund if the student cancels after the start of instruction, but before start of second 4 hour block.  
  • 16 hour OJT course: Student will be entitled to a 50% refund if the student cancels after the start of instruction, but before the start of the second 8 hour block of instruction.  If the instruction is divided between four 4 hour sessions, the refund schedule shall be 75%, 50%, and 25%.  
  • A DCJS approved security guard training school cannot assess any non-refundable registration fees, deposits, or cancellation fees.  
  • Reimbursement will be issued within the time frame specified in DCMO BOCES Policy #717.
