This Year's Program

This program takes place at SUNY Oneonta each fall and includes interactive sessions led by volunteer mentors (adult men) from local businesses and organizations who aim to motivate and inspire participants while discussing education, career clusters, and resources to help them plan for a bright future.

Event Tentative Agenda

Light Breakfast & Registration

Students will complete a Pre-Event Survey and will prepare for the day.

Opening Session

Go For The Gold!

2004 Olympic Swimmer, Daniel Ketchum will share his top three secrets for reaching success. Students will follow his journey to the gold and learn how to apply discipline to school, work, and life. Currently, Daniel is an Engineer at GE Aviation. He will also share with the students the benefits of entering careers in engineering with global organizations.

Session 1 – Technology (Animation)

"Tell Your Story"

Technology Educator, Todd Rutan will guide students to develop simple animation presentations. This session helps students develop creativity and communication skills. The hands-on workshop allows them to learn the fundamentals to apply after the program using free internet tools. Animation skills are excellent for writing stories, marketing presentations and also to convey complex information.

Session 2 – STEM

“The World of Aviation”

The team at the MVCC (Mohawk Valley Community College) Aviation program are joining us to inspire students to build strong math, science, AND technology academic skills to join the exciting and rewarding careers of the future. The hands-on exploration activities include flight simulator, assembly of airplane parts using schematics, and drones programming.

Session 3 – Career Development

“Building a Roadmap To Success”

The leadership team at ACCO Brands will mentor and guide students to map out their goals for the future. Using a workbook, students will conduct self-assessment of skills, knowledge and preferences. Mentors will share their success stories and encourage students to begin their life planning adventures now. Students take home the assessment document to discuss the steps with the school counselor.

“Event Assessment”

Students will return to their homeroom to complete a brief post-event survey to help us improve this program for others in the future.

Lunch at the College Cafeteria

“College Kid for a Day”

Students will enjoy lunch at the food court. They join other college students, mentors and peers. This is a free lunch with all-you-can-eat choices for lunch, desserts and drinks!
